Attending A Summer Funeral

Community Funeral Service • May 22, 2023

There are four seasons in the year and if there’s on thing you can guarantee about each of them it’s that people will pass on in every one of them.

Having a final service for a loved one is hard in any season of the year. If you are invited to a summer service at , though, you might treat that service a bit differently than you would a service in other seasons. As you plan to attend, here are some tips that can help you with the options as you move forward.

Black Isn’t Necessary

Keep in mind that while black used to be a required color for funerals, that’s no longer the case—especially in the summer. People often wear darker, muted colors during the wintertime, but in the summer, you definitely don’t need black. You might wear a lighter color, like white, and it’s perfectly acceptable and even expected.

Use Time Off To The Family’s Benefit

When you hear that someone is having a summer service, you might have some time off during that season. Teachers, for example, often have several months free and perhaps that describes your situation. You could consider using some of your time off to benefit the family in some way. Tell them you’ll mow their lawn all summer or trim the hedges and care for outdoor plants. You could arrange the reception for the funeral or do other things with that time. If you aren’t a teacher, but have a little time off you plan to use in the summer, you might dedicate at least some of it to their care.

Bring Water To An Outdoor Service

Outdoor services in the summer can be lovely. But they can also be rather hot and humid. It’s a good idea to bring a bottle of water with you in case you need it. If you have a small bag, perhaps you could even bring a few in case you see someone else getting emotional who could use a refreshing sip.

Offer To Help With Summer Chores

There are lots of things that need to get done around a house over the summer months and if your friend is struggling with grief, it can be hard for them to get it all done. Offer to plant summer flowers in the landscaping and make sure the grass gets watered and so on. Those choirs can be hard for someone who is grieving to get done, but having them off their minds can be a huge burden lifted from their shoulders.

There are lots of things you can do to help someone who is grieving around the final services they have for their family member. Summer services with funeral homes in La Mirada, CA often have a different feel than services at other times of the year.
