John T. Rens

November 28th, 1922 - August 8th, 2017

‚ÄčJohnny was the son of Tim and Elizabeth Rens. He was the 3rd of 6 children. He was raised on a farm near Orange City, Iowa where he attended the country school through the eighth grade.   

Johnny worked on the family farm and drove cattle truck until he was drafted into the Army in 1944. He served in Saipan, helping with WWII cleanup. and was discharged after 2 years of service.

On June 3, 1952, he married Gertrude Jeltema in Orange City, Iowa and celebrated 65 years of marriage this June.

Johnny and Gert  moved to Artesia, California in 1961 with their 3 daughters. He was a faithful member of Artesia First Christian Reformed Church for 56 years. He retired from driving cement truck in 1982. In retirement, Johnny and Gert enjoyed traveling around the United States and visiting Oregon often. These years were Johnny's true golden years.

Johnny was a man who pursued many hobbies; raising parakeets, beekeeping, taxidermy, leather craft, glass etching, grafting and propagating plants, building yard decorations and making coffee for friends. Johnny's witness was a strong example of unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. His strongest desire was that those nearest and dearest to him would know Christ as their Savior.

He is survived by his wife, Gertrude; daughters Marilyn (Jack)Platt of Independence, Oregon; Debbie (John) Zuidema of Corvallis, Oregon; 12 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren; sister, Helene Jasper; brother, Bing (Audrey) Rens; brother-in-law, Virgil De Vries; brother-in-law, Pete Jeltema; sister-in-law, Nupie Jeltema; sister-in-law, Marcia(John) Pulscher. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved daughter, Cindy Bultsma; sister, Hermina (Mel) Borgman; brother, Bill (Coba)Rens; sister, Lois De Vries; brother-in-laws, Vernon Jasper and Jim Jeltema; sister-in-law, Lois Jeltema
